Integral City 4.0
Integral City 4.0
Over three days, Integral City 4.0 introduces you to new ways to think about, act in, relate to and create the city of the future. We invite the 4+1 Voices of the Integral City (Business, Local Government, Civil Society and Citizens, plus actors from other regional cities) to meet each other and discover the unique contributions you make to the aliveness of the Human Hive. We believe the future of cities will emerge not just from the bottom up or the top down of any given city – but from the integrated actions of Citizens, Business, Local Government, Civil Society and the same complement of actors in other cities in your eco-region.
Creating the future of cities now

Marilyn is a passionate leader who brings bold and inspired perspectives to her work with community leaders and engaged citizens seeking to generate a thriving future for their community. Among her many accomplishments is the ability to elegantly navigate complexity in its myriad manifestations - including the complex terrain of human development – an emergent yet essential capacity for 21st-century change leaders.
Tam Lundy, PhD, Senior Associate at Canadian Self-Regulation Initiative
This event is specifically targetted at people from the 4 Voices of the city so they can practise working together as an integrated team. People who are:
- Business leaders seeking greater understanding of the opportunities for their businesses.
- Civil Society (Third Sector) leaders seeking more effective ways of delivering the services they provide.
- Local Government leaders with responsibilities across a range of services, such as health-care, schooling, law enforcement etc.
- Engaged Citizens, who explore, create and live their lives in the human hive.
During the retreat, we will draw upon the research of the author and the Integral City Communities of Practise (in Canada, USA, Netherlands, Spain, Russia, Mexico) integrating the experiences of your fellow participants to help develop deep insights into the patterns that are emerging in cities around the globe. You will see how these have impacted your personal, professional, community and urban life and learn how to integrate power, authority, influence, perspective, and aliveness
This event will explore the city as the Human Hive. We will create the conditions for you to explore all the Voices who inhabit your spheres of influence – including family, neighbourhood, workplaces, recreation zones, communities, city and eco-regions. We will invite you to experiment with Placecaring (the development of capacity for a place through growing the inner life of consciousness and culture) and Placemaking (the development of capacity for a place through growing the outer life that can be monitored and prototyped) to become conscious designers of the Integral City 4.0 – the most complex system currently being created by humans.
We will share the wisdom of Findhorn’s personal/professional development practises and connect them to the Integral City intelligences. You will have the opportunity to experiment with new designs for the challenges you face in your city environments. And you will gain experience with a set of five maps and an evolutionary compass to discover new solutions to the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) problems that plague the cities of today. You will depart with new tools and a set of guiding principles we call the Master Code to enable the emergence of sustainability and resilience for the Future of Cities now.
Inspired by the paradigm-shifting frameworks, research and impact designs of Marilyn Hamilton’s Integral City website, blogs, courses and books (Integral City: Evolutionary Intelligences for the Human Hive and Integral City Inquiry & Action: Designing Impact for the Human Hive), this workshop is being convened by author Marilyn Hamilton, Founder of Integral City Meshworks, with additional input from Findhorn Community practitioners.
